Funeral Director responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating arrangements for the funeral that are respectful, professional, timely, and sensitive
  • Meet with families of the deceased to discuss funeral arrangements, offer expertise to educate families of all their options, and follow through with their requests
  • Order casket, flowers, and other merchandise for funeral and memorial services
  • Make arrangements for clergy, musicians and other participants in the funeral/ceremony
  • Assist family in selecting a gravestone/completing monument work if necessary
  • Work in coordination with local cemetery personnel
  • Oversee preparation and embalming of the deceased prior to the funeral

Requirements and skills:

  • Proven work experience as a Funeral Director
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills
  • Exhibit patience, empathy, and compassion
  • Communicate calmly and kindly with bereaved family and friends
  • Detail oriented
  • Exhibit ability to properly manage and oversee a budget
  • Relevant training and/or certifications as a Funeral Director
  • Possess or be willing to obtain a Maine Funeral Service Practitioner license

What is Required:

● Maintain inventory (Prep Room, Showroom, etc.)

● Monitor prep room cleanliness - Each team cleans the prep room top to bottom on Wednesday when shift changes.

● Make sure the prep room is compliant with the state.

● Able to perform body transfers. (Knowledge and physical ability).

● Strong customer service, compassion, and caring.

  • Handles aftercare including the delivery of: documentation, stationery, information on insurance, health benefits and pension, and pre-arrangements for next of kin
  • Ensures adherence to all professional, municipal, provincial/state, and federal licensing authority, regulations, and rules applicable to the provision of funeral services
  • Prepares and accurately completes documents and online entries related to services, cremations, maintenance
  • Promotes and maintain a safe and healthy work environment
  • Retains heritage and grows market share through active involvement with community, religious and other organizations

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral service or mortuary science as required by state/provincial law

Experience

  • Apprentice, Funeral Director experience as required by state/provincial law
  • 2 years of directly related experience preferred

Certification/Licenses

  • Must meet all licensing requirements required by state/province law and as prescribed by each state board
  • Current state/province issued driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of religious and fraternal organizations customs
  • Knowledge of computers and some software including MS Office Suite required
  • High level of compassion and integrity
  • Good communication skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities
